New liability for charities housing people unlawfully in U.S.

The law allows victims to sue a charitable group that provides housing to a person it knows is unlawfully in the U.S. Liability applies only if that person commits a criminal offense while getting housing services and the group was negligent, grossly negligent, or acted willfully or wantonly in providing the housing. “Housing” means long-term living in a shelter, an apartment, or a rental home, and includes help getting or signing a lease. It does not include temporary overnight stays. The law takes effect immediately.
