Crime victim awards follow national average

The law sets Tennessee’s maximum crime‑victim award at 105% of the national average, rounded up to the next $100. By June 30, 2025, the treasurer posts the amount that applies to crimes on or after July 1, 2025. Starting in 2026, the treasurer compares our cap to other states each year and may adjust it, leaving out states without a clear or similar cap. Any new amount is posted online by May 1 and takes effect July 1 for crimes on or after that date; the posting is not a formal rule. The cap cannot be lowered without written approval from the Senate and House finance chairs; without it by May 1, no cut happens.
