Beginning July 1, 2025, if a student under 18 is searched at school, the principal must tell the parent or legal guardian within a reasonable time.
Beginning July 1, 2025, only three roles may search students at school: a school resource officer acting as a school official, a school security officer, or a school administrator who finished the state training. All searches must follow the U.S. and Tennessee Constitutions. Police can still carry out lawful searches on school property.
The Department of Education now runs a training program to teach administrators about student search rights. Local school districts and police may offer local training, too. School administrators must complete the state training before they conduct student searches allowed under the law. The training program is in effect now. The new search authority that relies on this training starts July 1, 2025.
