High schools teach safe haven law

Beginning with the 2026–2027 school year, Tennessee public high schools must teach students in grades 9–12 about the state’s safe haven law. Lessons explain how a mother can safely surrender an unharmed infant without criminal charges under state law. The State Board of Education sets the teaching guidelines with help from the Department of Education. The Department is encouraged to work with A Secret Safe Place for Newborns of Tennessee, Inc., on materials. The Department must send the guidelines to each district and each public charter high school before the 2026–2027 school year starts.
