New rules for late judge, prosecutor, and defender races

When a judge, district attorney general, or public defender job opens after the regular qualifying deadline, a special timeline applies. The qualifying period then follows section 17-4-308(j). Statewide parties may pick a nominee using any method allowed by their party rules. The nominating body’s chair must certify the party nominee to the state coordinator of elections by the section 17-4-308(j) deadline. Independent candidates must file nominating petitions under section 2-5-104 to qualify. After receiving certifications, the coordinator of elections certifies party nominees to each county election commission where they will be on the ballot.
