Tennessee updates violent crime definition

Beginning July 1, 2025, Tennessee changes what counts as a crime of violence. The law lists crimes such as any murder, voluntary manslaughter, rape and aggravated rape, rape of a child, aggravated sexual battery, robbery (including aggravated and especially aggravated), burglary (including aggravated and especially aggravated), aggravated assault, kidnapping (including aggravated and especially aggravated), carjacking, trafficking for a commercial sex act, especially aggravated sexual exploitation, felony child abuse, and aggravated child abuse. Courts and prosecutors use this label for sentencing rules and other legal limits tied to violent crimes. The new definition applies across the state’s public safety laws.
