Stricter rules for perishable home foods

Beginning July 1, 2025, Tennessee tightens rules for perishable homemade foods. Home-based sellers cannot use unpasteurized milk, alcohol, fish, shellfish, or any meat in these items. Sales must be in person. You or your agent must meet the buyer in person, such as at a farm stand on the property where the food was prepared. This limits what you can sell and blocks remote or shipped sales.

Poultry sales allowed under federal rules

Beginning July 1, 2025, home-based food businesses may sell poultry only as federal law allows. You can sell if you qualify for the 1,000-bird producer exemption and use only those exempt birds. Or you can sell inspected poultry that bears the official inspection mark and meets all 9 CFR 381.10(d) conditions. If you do not meet one of these paths, you cannot sell poultry under the home-based rules.
