Easier licensure for experienced tattoo artists

Beginning January 1, 2026, experienced out-of-state tattoo artists can get a Tennessee license by showing at least two years of professional work in another state. Proof can include business licenses, tax records, or similar records. If you were in business in Tennessee on October 1, 1996, you are exempt from the new training and supervisor rule.

One-year apprenticeship for tattoo license

Beginning January 1, 2026, you must complete at least one year of training in a certified tattoo shop to get a Tennessee license. Training includes tattooing and sterilization methods. Your trainer must be a currently licensed Tennessee tattoo artist who has three or more years certified and operating in Tennessee, or has fewer than three years in Tennessee but 10 or more years licensed in another state. You must sign the state’s apprenticeship completion application to certify the training.
