A county can start this only after a two-thirds vote by its county legislative body. After adoption, courts add $12.50 to every misdemeanor and felony cost bill. Nonmoving traffic violations are exempt. In single-county districts, the county receives the money. In multi-county districts, it goes to the district attorneys general conference for that district. The district attorney decides how to use the funds for public safety services. Unused money carries forward to the next year. Restitution and the criminal injuries compensation privilege tax get paid before this fee. District attorneys must file yearly reports on amounts collected and how funds were used.
