Local school districts and public charter schools may pay for a deceased teacher’s unused, accrued annual and sick leave. This applies when the teacher died on or after September 1, 2024, while employed. The payment follows the same rules used for state employee leave payouts. A teacher can name a beneficiary to receive the money; if none is named, it goes to the beneficiary listed for the teacher’s Tennessee Consolidated Retirement System (TCRS) benefits.
The education department sets rules for when a student counts toward a teacher’s record. In classes with a state TCAP test, a student only counts after 150 days in that class. If the school uses a block schedule, the threshold is 75 days. Schools use these rules when assigning student records for evaluations and accountability.
