Penalties for fake rideshare and taxi drivers

The law makes it a crime to pose as a rideshare or taxi/limousine driver with intent to deceive. Impersonation includes false claims, fake logos or signs, or saying you are picking up a requested ride. For rideshare drivers, it is a Class B misdemeanor; it becomes a Class E felony if done while committing another felony. For taxis, limos, and sedans that carry up to 14 passengers, mainly in cities and not on fixed routes, it is a Class B misdemeanor. This rule does not apply to the owner if the vehicle was stolen. The law takes effect July 1, 2025, and applies to acts on or after that date.
