Maternal mental health training for clinicians

The law requires the Department of Health to work with an approved in-state, accredited sponsor to create or find a maternal mental health course. It applies to physicians, osteopathic physicians, and psychologists and examiners licensed in Tennessee. The course covers screening best practices, the types of maternal mental health disorders, evidence-based treatments, and when to consult or refer to a psychiatrist. The medical and osteopathic boards accept this course for continuing education for doctors who practice pediatrics, obstetrics/gynecology, or psychiatry. Credit is available to psychologists who are health service providers, psychological examiners, senior psychological examiners, and certified psychological assistants. Boards must keep the curriculum up to date. This law is in effect now.
