When a school district reports a credible threat or major disruption at a public school to state or local police, it must notify parents at that school. The district must send the alert within 48 hours of its report to law enforcement. It can use its usual phone, email, or text system.
Each local school board must state at every quarterly meeting how many incidents were reported to law enforcement that required parent notice. The report must show the count for that quarter and the year-to-date total. Parents can hear these totals at board meetings.
A report made only to a school resource officer or an off-duty armed school security officer does not count as a report to law enforcement. Parents get the 48-hour notice only after that officer reports the threat to a police agency. This can delay or reduce alerts in some cases.
