New definitions for abortion health exceptions

The law sets clear medical terms used in Tennessee’s abortion law. It says an “inevitable abortion” is when the cervix opens before the pregnancy is viable. It defines a “serious risk” to a major body function as a pregnancy condition that directly or indirectly causes lasting, irreversible harm. Examples include previable PPROM, inevitable abortion, severe preeclampsia, mirror syndrome with fetal hydrops, and infections that risk uterine rupture or loss of fertility. Mental health conditions do not count. Doctors, courts, and prosecutors use these rules, which can limit who qualifies for a health exception or legal defense.
