Safety rules for delivery robots in traffic

Beginning July 1, 2026, delivery robots are banned from bike lanes on roads with speed limits over 45 mph. They are also banned from shoulders or curb‑edge areas on roads over 45 mph, and from any interstate or controlled‑access highway. A robot may not use a crosswalk unless it can spot signs and signals, tell people and cars apart, and yield to pedestrians and turning traffic. These limits keep robots out of fast traffic and protect people walking.

Where delivery robots can operate statewide

Beginning July 1, 2026, people and companies can run delivery robots on sidewalks, crosswalks, bike lanes or paths, shoulders, near the curb, parking lots, and similar areas. Devices may go up to 20 mph in other non‑pedestrian areas. Robots follow pedestrian rules in pedestrian areas and bicycle rules in other areas, except rules that do not fit robots. This sets clear places and speeds for safe use across Tennessee.

Local control over delivery robots

Starting July 1, 2026, cities and counties may set rules or ban delivery robots when needed for public safety. Local rules must fit with the state law. This lets local leaders respond to sidewalk and street conditions in their area.
