Age cutoff in e-bike law now 16

Beginning July 1, 2026, the age in this section changes from under 14 to under 16. If your child is 14 or 15, this part of the e-bike law now applies to them.

Limits on class 3 e-bikes on paths

Class 3 e-bikes cannot use bike paths or trails where bicycles are allowed. They can use a path that is within or next to a street or highway, or where a city, county, or state agency gives permission. These rules are in effect now.

Broader access and local limits for class 1-2 e-bikes

Class 1 and class 2 e-bikes can ride anywhere bicycles are allowed. This includes bike lanes, shoulders or berms, and bike paths and trails for bicyclists. Cities, counties, and state agencies can limit or ban class 1 and 2 e-bikes for public safety, even on parts of state highways. These rules are in effect now.
