Three civics field days for high schoolers

The law requires every Tennessee public high school to give three civics field days to students in the United States government and civics course. One visit covers each branch: legislative, judicial, and executive. Classes visit a city council or county commission or the General Assembly; a courthouse or judge; and a mayor’s office or the governor’s office. Activities must match state civics standards. This starts in the 2026-2027 school year and continues each year.

Absence and discipline rules for civics trips

Beginning in the 2026-2027 school year, schools do not have to reschedule a required civics visit if a student is absent that day. A public high school may also bar a student from a visit for disciplinary reasons, following the district or charter policy. These rules apply to students enrolled in the United States government and civics course.
