Faculty and instructors at Tennessee public colleges and universities can teach the positive impacts of religion when teaching American history. Examples include the Pilgrims, the Declaration of Independence, religious leaders, the Ten Commandments, religion’s role in the civil rights movement, and the national motto and pledge. This applies only to American history instruction in public higher education. The law takes effect July 1, 2026 and applies starting with the 2026–2027 school year and every year after. Students may see this content in their history courses.
