The law takes effect upon becoming law. The rules apply right away to law enforcement, courts, and registered owners of autonomous vehicles.
The law defines an autonomous vehicle as a car that drives itself without a human supervising it. If a Tennessee-certified or state-commissioned officer says such a vehicle broke Tennessee traffic laws, a notice must be sent by first-class mail to the registered owner’s last known address. The notice must be mailed within 20 business days after the violation, unless there are registration issues, and it must use Tennessee addresses for returns and payments. It must state the fine and list any other fees or court costs separately. You have 30 days from the mailing date to pay. No extra penalties can be added unless a second first-class notice is mailed that gives another 30 days. The owner may pay the fine instead of going to court. If you do not pay on time, or you contest it and the vehicle is found to have committed the offense, additional fees or court costs may be added.
