The law requires TennCare to post two statewide reports on psychotropic drug use and costs. First reports are due by January 1, 2027. Starting July 1, 2027, reports come twice a year, due within 90 days after each calendar year ends and within 90 days after the state fiscal year begins. One report covers all TennCare members with at least one psychotropic drug and shows age groups (0–5, 6–12, 13–17, 18–64, 65+), medication bands (1–3, 4–6, 7–10, 11–14, 15+), county (unless privacy rules require suppression), percent of members in each group, and total costs with state and federal subtotals. The second report covers children in state custody receiving foster care whose psychotropic drugs are paid by the TennCare pharmacy benefit. It counts distinct drugs per child over a year only when taken 90 or more days and breaks out by age, medication bands, county, and costs with state and federal subtotals. Both reports use TennCare medical and pharmacy claims and may add approved federal data, and include two prior calendar years for comparison. All data are de-identified under HIPAA with small-cell suppression. Reports are posted on the TennCare website and sent to the Senate Health and Welfare Committee and the House health committee. Psychotropic drugs include antipsychotics, antidepressants, agents for control of mania and depression, antianxiety agents, stimulants, and hypnotics.
