No hiring relatives for Springfield city jobs

The law bans Springfield from hiring any relative of an elected city official or the city manager. It also bans hiring or employing someone to work in the same department as their relative who already works for the city. “Relative” includes parent, foster parent, parent‑in‑law, child, spouse, brother, foster brother, sister, foster sister, grandparent, grandchild, son‑in‑law, daughter‑in‑law, sister‑in‑law, brother‑in‑law, and any other family member who lives in the same household. This law has no local effect unless the City of Springfield’s legislative body approves it by a two‑thirds (2/3) vote and the presiding officer certifies the result to the Tennessee secretary of state. It is effective now only to allow that local vote.
