Wisconsin creates a refundable income tax credit for parents of a stillbirth. You claim it for the year the stillbirth occurs. A married couple filing jointly can get up to $2,000 per stillbirth. If you file separately, or the parents are unmarried, each parent can get up to $1,000 per stillbirth. You must be a full‑year Wisconsin resident. Part‑year residents and nonresidents cannot claim it. You cannot claim it for a short tax year, unless your tax year ends because of your death. You must attach a copy of the Wisconsin fetal death report to your return. File within the refund time limit in Wisconsin law (s. 71.75(2)). The credit first applies to tax years starting January 1 of the year this section takes effect; if it takes effect after July 31, it starts the next January 1.
