Stronger penalties for break-ins to commit battery

The law adds battery to Wisconsin’s unlawful-entry crime. It is a Class F felony to enter a place listed in the burglary law without consent. This applies when, at entry, a person intends to steal, commit any felony, or commit battery or aggravated battery. In higher-risk cases, the law still allows Class E felony charges. Class F carries up to $25,000 in fines and up to 12 years and 6 months in prison. Class E carries up to $50,000 in fines and up to 15 years in prison. The change aims to deter violent break-ins and protect people inside.
