Bill Overview

Analyzed Economic Effects

3 provisions identified: 0 benefits, 2 costs, 1 mixed.

Tighter axle and weight rules

Under these permits, the weight on any group of six or more consecutive axles must follow the state’s maximum‑weight table. An axle that carries less than 8% of your rig’s gross weight does not count toward your axle total. These rules can lower the load you may carry on a given setup and may require different equipment or more trips.

Heavier-load permits for farm goods

The Department of Transportation issues annual or consecutive‑month permits to haul grain, commercial feed, or bulk fertilizer in 6+ axle rigs. The permit lets you exceed normal state weight limits, up to 91,000 pounds, within Wisconsin. You apply through the department’s electronic system and pay a $325 fee per permit. This helps many farm haulers carry more per trip if they meet these rules.

Route and seasonal limits for farm hauls

These permits work only on department‑designated routes to certain sites: rail yards, shipyards, ports, ethanol plants, manufacturing plants, grain elevators, or feed mills. They are not valid on interstates unless federal law allows it without risking federal aid. If your route uses a non‑trunk road, you must get written approval from that road’s maintenance officer and carry it. The department can suspend these permits during the spring thaw.
