Standard colors and placement for police lights

The law sets where police lights go. On marked cars, blue is on the passenger side and red on the driver side, on the roof or inside. Unmarked cars must also show blue on the passenger side and red on the driver side when used as police vehicles. If those base colors are in place, extra blue and red lights may be added on the front, sides, or rear. All lights must be easy to see and understand from 500 feet in daylight and at night.

When police can use warning lights

Police may use warning lights only in set situations: responding to an emergency call; chasing a suspected law violator; responding to a fire alarm (not returning); parked in a hazardous spot on a highway; or as allowed by state law. When using special driving privileges in state law, the emergency lights must be on. This sets clear rules for when lights are required and prevents routine use.
