You can get a Search and Rescue specialty plate for a noncommercial vehicle registered in Wyoming. It is not for a commercial vehicle you own or lease. You pay $150 once to get eligibility and $50 each later year to keep it; the $50 is waived the year you pay $150. Apply at least 30 days before your registration is due; you still pay normal registration and plate fees. County treasurers issue the plates, and you must use the plate only on that vehicle. If you replace lost or stolen plates, you cannot display the duplicates until the old sticker would have expired. If fewer than 1,000 sets are issued by December 31, 2032, the state stops making this plate. The law starts July 1, 2025, and plates are available January 1, 2026.
The law creates a Search and Rescue Account to fund rescue work. Fees from SAR plates and certain other listed fees go into this account. When you register a vehicle, the form offers a voluntary donation to Search and Rescue. County treasurers send those donations to the State Treasurer for deposit in the Account. The Office of Homeland Security can accept and solicit gifts, and the State Treasurer may invest the funds; earnings stay in the Account. Money in the Account is set aside for search and rescue uses allowed by law. These funding and donation rules start July 1, 2025.
