Broader protections for unpaid emergency and mental health aid

Beginning July 1, 2025, the law expands legal immunity for people who give unpaid help during emergencies, including mental health crises. Anyone, including doctors, who in good faith gives unpaid aid at the scene is generally protected from civil lawsuits for mistakes. Volunteer ambulance and rescue services, and their unpaid volunteers, are also protected when the group is publicly or privately funded and charges nothing or only small incidental fees. This protection does not cover gross negligence or willful or wanton misconduct. You count as an unpaid volunteer if you get small per call pay or no more than $1,000 a year. The immunity also covers a medical director for an ambulance service, hospitals and staff giving Department of Health approved clinical training, and students in approved emergency or mental health training. If an act is covered by the Wyoming Governmental Claims Act, this immunity is reduced up to the Act's maximum liability.
