Higher fines for harming service animals

The top fine for knowingly injuring or killing a service or assistance animal rises from $750 to $5,000. The crime stays a misdemeanor and can include up to one year in jail. It applies when a person acts without lawful cause, or orders or lets their animal cause serious harm or death.

Service dogs in training protected

Wyoming now follows the federal definition of a service animal. Service miniature horses still count under that rule. A dog being trained to help a person with a disability also counts as a service animal. This gives access and protection during training. The law takes effect right away once the final steps under Article 4, Section 8 are done.
