Beginning July 1, 2025, the Wyoming Oil and Gas Conservation Commission regulates certain oilfield waste pits. The rules cover where pits can be, how they are built, run, and cleaned up. They apply to noncommercial reserve pits, produced water retention pits, and emergency overflow pits. These pits must be used only to store, treat, or dispose of drilling fluids, produced water, emergency overflow wastes, or other oil-field wastes from wells on a lease, unit, or communitized area. The goal is to prevent contamination of Wyoming’s waters. Discharges allowed under a federal NPDES permit are not covered. Oil and gas operators and owners must follow these rules.
