Beginning July 1, 2025, a court can terminate parental rights in a specific situation. The child must have a court‑appointed guardian who is a relative (as defined in W.S. 3-2-301(a)(iii)) and must have lived with that guardian for at least 24 straight months. The court must also find the parent unfit to have custody and control. The judge must base this on clear and convincing evidence. This gives relative guardians and children a path to permanent care, but parents found unfit can lose custody and parental rights.
