When on official duty to guard military gear, a state security officer, any armed forces member, or a Wyoming National Guard member in active state service may use reasonable force to defend it. This includes deadly force, but only in line with published military use‑of‑force rules. Guard members on state orders and state security officers are not personally liable for acts done in necessary duties under orders. This does not cover acts that are clearly illegal, excessively violent, or malicious. If they are sued, the state provides legal counsel at state expense, with the Attorney General’s approval. The law defines a “state security officer” as a military department employee whose main job is to be armed and secure military assets. These protections apply to qualifying acts on or after the law’s effective date.
