Local governments can lower speed limits on unpaved roads to as low as 35 mph without a speed study. This starts July 1, 2025. The state transportation department cannot require a study for these roads. The department must write rules to guide how locals set and enforce limits.
Local governments can set a temporary speed limit below 35 mph on unpaved roads for up to one year. This starts July 1, 2025. No speed study is required. They must first consult their engineer or road and bridge chief and the police. Reasons include work zones, events, emergencies, or changes in use.
