Beginning July 1, 2025, county coroners handle unclaimed money and property found on a deceased person under new rules. The coroner must try in good faith to contact next of kin. The coroner gives the property to the estate’s personal representative, or if none, to the district court clerk. If no personal representative exists and no next of kin claims it within 180 days, the coroner sells the items at public auction or another county-approved sale. Sale money first pays burial costs. Any money left over above $50 goes to the Wyoming State Treasurer under the Uniform Unclaimed Property Act. Small personal items worth under $50, and items needed for the family’s convenience, can be released to the next of kin.
