Freeport-McMoRan

FCXHQ US · Arizonawebsite ↗

U.S. copper mining and smelting company (NYSE: FCX; HQ Phoenix, AZ; ~$23B revenue); largest publicly traded copper company in the world. Freeport operates copper mines in Arizona (Morenci — world's largest copper mine by production; Bagdad, Safford, Sierrita), New Mexico (Chino, Tyrone), Indonesia (Grasberg — world's largest single copper deposit), and Peru (Cerro Verde). Freeport refines copper into cathode via two pathways: (1) conventional smelting at its Miami, Arizona smelter (processes concentrate from Morenci and purchased concentrate), and (2) SX-EW (solvent extraction / electrowinning) cathode production directly from oxide ore at Bagdad AZ, Safford AZ, Chino NM, and Tyrone NM. Freeport also owns Atlantic Copper (Huelva, Spain — largest copper smelter in Europe by concentrate throughput) via its European subsidiary. Grasberg (Indonesia) is operated via PT Freeport Indonesia, a joint venture with the Indonesian government (51% ownership). Freeport is the largest single copper producer in North America.

Atlantic Copper Smelter (Huelva, Spain)

ES

Andalusia · smelter

Largest copper smelter in Europe by concentrate throughput; fully owned by Freeport-McMoRan via its Atlantic Copper subsidiary. Located in Huelva, on the Rio Tinto estuary in Andalusia — the same region where the ancient Phoenicians and Romans mined copper from Rio Tinto (literally 'Red River') deposits 2,500 years ago. Processes ~1.2 million tonnes of copper concentrate per year, producing ~315,000 tonnes of cathode annually. Primarily processes Freeport's own North American and Indonesian concentrate, with some third-party concentrate. Produces sulfuric acid (sold to Spanish fertilizer manufacturers and Moroccan phosphate processors) and precious metal byproducts. Source: https://www.atlanticcopper.com/en/smelter-and-refinery

Has transitioned from open-pit (Grasberg Open Pit, now exhausted) to underground block cave mining (Grasberg Block Cave, Deep Mill Level Zone). Production of ~800,000 tonnes/year copper concentrate equivalent. Indonesian government (through Inalum/MIND ID) holds 51% stake. Subject to periodic export bans, smelter conversion requirements under Indonesian mining law, and labor disputes.

Freeport-McMoRan Miami Smelter (Miami, AZ)

US

Arizona · smelter

Primary copper smelter in the U.S.; one of only two remaining U.S. copper smelters (along with ASARCO Hayden smelter). Located in Miami, Gila County, Arizona. Processes concentrate from Freeport's Morenci mine and purchased third-party concentrate into anode copper; electrolytic refining produces LME-registered cathode. U.S. copper smelting capacity has declined dramatically — from 16 smelters in 1970 to 2 operational today. Source: https://www.fcx.com/operations/north-america

Freeport-McMoRan Morenci Mine (Arizona)

US

Arizona · mining

Largest copper mine in North America by production; open-pit operation in Greenlee County AZ; produces copper cathode via SX-EW process.

Freeport-McMoRan Safford SX-EW Operations (Safford, AZ)

US

Arizona · processing

SX-EW (solvent extraction / electrowinning) copper cathode operation at Safford, Graham County, Arizona. Produces ~100,000 tonnes of LME-registered copper cathode per year from oxide ore without conventional smelting. Noted as one of the most sustainable copper operations in the Americas — uses minimal water (closed-loop process), produces no SO2 emissions (no smelting furnaces), and operates a low-carbon direct-cathode process. SX-EW cathode meets LME Grade A specification directly without electrolytic refining. Source: https://www.fcx.com/operations/north-america/safford

Grasberg Minerals District

ID

Papua Province · mine

World's second-largest copper mine and largest gold mine. Underground transition completed ~2019. Freeport (via PT Freeport Indonesia) holds 48.76%; MIND ID (Indonesian state) 51.24%. Produced ~1.0B lbs copper/yr (FCX equity share) in 2024–2025.

Grasberg Mining Complex

ID

Papua Province · mine

Grasberg (Papua Province, Indonesia; altitude ~4,200m; FCX 48.76%, PT Mineral Industri Indonesia/Inalum 51.24%) is one of the world's largest copper and gold deposits by reserves, and historically the world's largest gold mine as a copper byproduct. Discovered by Dutch geologist Jean-Jacques Dozy in 1936; Freeport began developing the Ertsberg ore body in 1967 under a Contract of Work with the Indonesian government; Grasberg pit discovered 1988. The massive open-pit operation (Grasberg Open Pit — now largely mined out) transitioned to underground block cave mining (Grasberg Block Cave, Deep Mill Level Zone/Deep MLZ) in the late 2010s. Annual copper production approximately 370,000-450,000 tonnes (concentrate and cathode combined) and 1.2-1.6 million ounces gold. The 2018 divestiture to PT Mineral Industri Indonesia (Inalum) — required under Indonesia's Mining Law — transferred operating control to a new structure: PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) is 51.24% Inalum and 48.76% FCX, with FCX retaining operating management. Morenci Copper Mine

US

Arizona · mine

Morenci (Greenlee County, Arizona; FCX 72%, Sumitomo Metal Mining/Sumitomo Corporation 28%) is the largest copper mine in the United States, producing approximately 430,000-490,000 tonnes/year of copper — primarily as copper cathode via sulfuric acid heap leach/SX-EW (solvent extraction-electrowinning) rather than as copper ore concentrate. Morenci is an open-pit porphyry copper deposit first mined by Phelps Dodge (founded 1834) from 1872; it is one of the oldest continuously operating copper mines in North America. FCX acquired Phelps Dodge (and Morenci) in 2007 for $25.9B. Morenci represents approximately 50% of total US domestic copper mine production — making FCX the dominant US copper miner by a wide margin. The town of Morenci (company town built by Phelps Dodge) was demolished and rebuilt multiple times as the open pit expanded. Source: FCX Annual Report 2024; USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries 2024.

  • Did you know2023

Freeport-McMoRan's Grasberg mine (Papua, Indonesia) is simultaneously one of the world's largest copper producers and the world's largest gold mine as a byproduct of copper ore — producing approximately 1.2-1.6 million troy ounces of gold per year from the same ore body that yields copper concentrate. The copper-gold correlation at Grasberg is so strong that FCX's effective gold production cost (net of copper revenue credits) is frequently negative — meaning FCX is effectively paid to mine gold at Grasberg by the copper revenue. Grasberg's copper concentrate has an unusually high gold content (~30-50 grams/tonne in the concentrate), which is recovered during smelting and refining. This makes Grasberg's mine output commercially unique: the same ore concentrate shipment delivers copper (an industrial metal essential for electrification) and gold (a monetary reserve metal and defense electronics material). Gold recovered from Grasberg's copper concentrate has historically contributed to Indonesia's central bank reserves. The mine's dual copper-gold output creates geopolitical leverage for both Indonesia (which now holds 51% of the asset) and the US (FCX is a US-headquartered company). Source: FCX Annual Report 2024.

    Freeport-McMoRan
  • Incident2024

Freeport-McMoRan's Grasberg mine in Papua, Indonesia, is subject to an Indonesian mining law requirement to build domestic copper smelting capacity as a condition of export permits. After years of negotiations, Freeport committed to building the PTFI Manyar smelter in Gresik, East Java, with 1 million tonne/year concentrate capacity. Until Manyar was operational (targeting 2023–2024), Indonesia periodically threatened or imposed export bans on copper concentrate, temporarily disrupting global concentrate supply. In 2024, Indonesia rejected Freeport's export permit, briefly halting exports from one of the world's largest copper mines. Grasberg is also the world's second-largest gold mine — making it a dual-critical site for two metals.
