HeidelbergMaterials commissioned the world's first commercial-scale carbon capture and storage (CCS) plant at a cement factory in Brevik, Norway in June 2025 — capturing 400,000 tonnes of CO2 per year from the cement kiln exhaust. The captured CO2 is compressed, liquefied, and shipped by tanker to offshore geological storage sites under the North Sea. This milestone matters because cement calcination CO2 (limestone heating: CaCO3 → CaO + CO2) is chemical — not combustion — and cannot be eliminated by switching to renewable electricity. CCS is the only technologically viable path to net-zero cement. The Brevik plant was funded partly by the Norwegian government (which provided substantial grants as part of the Longship CCS project). A German cement company funded by Norway's sovereign wealth fund is demonstrating the technology the entire cement industry needs to decarbonize. The CO2 shipping infrastructure (liquid CO2 tankers from Norway to offshore storage) is a new supply chain that does not currently exist at commercial scale — HeidelbergMaterials is simultaneously a cement company and a CO2 logistics operator.
