Kinder Morgan's Plantation Pipeline served as an emergency overflow route during the 2021 Colonial shutdown — but within 48 hours, Plantation was operating at maximum capacity and could not accept additional volume. Kinder Morgan also operates the Transmix processing system for Colonial-adjacent refined products; transmix (the blended interface product between different fuel batches in a pipeline) is processed at facilities that depend on Colonial operations. A Colonial shutdown does not merely reduce supply — it also creates a transmix disposal problem for the entire pipeline system. Kinder Morgan's dual role as Colonial's only partial competitor (Plantation) and as a downstream service provider (transmix processing) creates a structural co-dependency: the companies compete commercially while being technically co-dependent in a disruption scenario.
