  • Did you know2022

PVS Chemicals is the only US-owned manufacturer of ultra-high-purity (UHP) sulfuric acid for semiconductor fabrication — a product requiring impurity levels measured in parts per trillion. Their Buffalo, NY plant produces three generations of purity grades for silicon wafer cleaning, integrated circuit fab, and PCB manufacturing, with $30M invested since 2016. Known externally as a bulk industrial acid company, PVS is quietly a domestic critical supplier as the US tries to onshore chip manufacturing — positioned near Micron's new Syracuse DRAM fab. Absence of domestic UHP acid supply would force US fabs to depend entirely on Asian producers (Mitsubishi Chemical, Stella Chemifa).

  • Capacity2023

PVS operates acid regeneration facilities co-located with major US steel mills, converting spent pickle liquor (SPL) back into hydrochloric acid for steel pickling operations — a closed-loop industrial service. The process generates iron oxide as a high-value byproduct, sold into pigment and permanent magnet applications. Iron oxide for magnets is a meaningful rare-earth-adjacent supply chain connection: synthetic iron oxide from steel pickling waste feeds into the same magnet ecosystem as neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) components.

  • Origin2023

PVS Chemicals was founded in Detroit in 1945 as a battery acid supplier by the Nicholson family. It remains privately held (family-owned) after 80 years and has grown from a single Detroit facility into a conglomerate with 17 manufacturing plants, distribution locations in the US, Europe, Canada, and Asia, and 1,400+ employees — without ever going public. Growth has been entirely through acquisition and organic expansion, the most recent being SAL Chemical (February 2025) and DX Holding chlor-alkali (2023).
