    Raw gas source extraction

    Noble gases (Ne, Kr, Xe) extracted as byproducts from cryogenic air separation units (ASUs), often co-located with legacy steel mills. Helium extracted from natural gas wellheads (0.3–1.9 mol% He) via nitrogen rejection units in LNG plants.

    Crude cryogenic separation

    Cryogenic distillation separates atmospheric gases by boiling point: N₂ (–196°C), Ar (–186°C), O₂ (–183°C), Ne (–246°C). Neon-rich fraction extracted from low-pressure column tops. Crude helium enriched to 97% via membrane or PSA systems.

  3. 03

    Chemical precursor synthesis

    Reactive specialty gases synthesized from mineral/chemical precursors: HF + NH₃ → NF₃ (chamber cleaning); W metal + F₂ → WF₆ (tungsten CVD); SiH₄ synthesized from metallurgical silicon and hydrogen. Requires dedicated corrosion-resistant reactors.

    Ultra-high purity processing (5N–6N)

    Multi-stage distillation, molecular sieve adsorption, catalytic getters, and membrane separation achieve 99.999–99.9999% purity. Point-of-use purifiers installed at customer fabs maintain purity through final delivery. Trace metal contamination measured in ppt (parts per trillion).

    Cylinder and bulk vessel filling

    Purified gases compressed into treated steel cylinders or cryogenic dewars. Liquid helium filled at 4K (–269°C); liquid nitrogen/argon at –196°C. Toxic/reactive gases (NF₃, WF₆, SiH₄) filled in specialty corrosion-resistant containers with double-valve systems.

  6. 06

    Fab delivery system integration

    Bulk gas systems, high-purity gas cabinets, remote plasma units (for NF₃ chamber cleaning), pressure regulators, mass flow controllers, and point-of-use purifiers installed and certified at each fab. Continuous monitoring for purity excursions.
