Air Products and Chemicals (NYSE: APD; Allentown, PA; ~$12B revenue) licenses the APCI (Air Products and Chemicals, Inc.) natural gas liquefaction process technology used in many small- and mid-scale LNG liquefaction trains worldwide, including utility peak-shaving plants. The APCI propane pre-cooled mixed refrigerant (C3MR) process dominates large baseload LNG export trains globally (used in >90% of world's baseload LNG capacity), but Air Products also licenses adapted cycles for smaller peak-shaving applications. Air Products competes with Linde Engineering for small-scale liquefaction process technology licensing. Air Products is also the world's largest industrial gas producer, supplying nitrogen and other gases used in LNG facility construction and purging.

  • Did you know2023

Air Products holds the technology license for more than 90% of the world's baseload LNG export capacity through its APCI C3MR (propane pre-cooled mixed refrigerant) process — yet it is primarily known as an industrial gas supplier. The Qatar LNG complex (world's largest single LNG producer), Australia's Northwest Shelf, Algeria's Skikda, Trinidad's ALNG, and nearly every other major LNG export facility in the world was built using Air Products-licensed liquefaction technology. Air Products collects technology license fees and equipment sales from every new LNG train built worldwide. An industrial oxygen and nitrogen company is the invisible technology licensor for the global LNG infrastructure that provides a substantial fraction of Europe's and Asia's natural gas supply.

  • Capacity2023

Air Products is building the NEOM Green Hydrogen Project in Saudi Arabia — a $8.5B facility using 4 GW of dedicated wind and solar to power 650+ MW of electrolysis producing green hydrogen, which will be converted to ammonia for export to Europe and Asia. This would make NEOM the world's largest green hydrogen export facility and Air Products the single largest owner of committed clean hydrogen production capacity globally. An industrial gas company that pioneered LNG technology licensing in the 1970s has bet its corporate future on green hydrogen — committing capital equivalent to two-thirds of its annual revenue to a single Saudi desert hydrogen project.

  • Origin2023

Air Products and Chemicals was founded in 1940 in Detroit by Leonard Parker Pool, who had the insight to offer on-site gas generation at customer facilities — rather than delivering cylinders — which created a model where the gas plant is co-located with the customer and tied by long-term contract. This 'on-site supply model' became the dominant structure of the industrial gas industry globally. Air Products later developed the APCI C3MR LNG liquefaction process technology in the 1960s-1970s, which became the industry standard for baseload LNG export. In 2016, Air Products sold its Performance Materials/chemicals division to Evonik for $3.8B to become a focused pure-play industrial gas company.
