Sponsored By: Representative Bacon, Don [R-NE-2]

Introduced

Summary

Independent scientific assessment of partial-body bone marrow shielding against gamma radiation. This bill would require the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Nuclear, Chemical, and Biological Defense, Policy and Programs to seek an agreement with a University Affiliated Research Center (UARC) affiliated with United States Strategic Command to carry out the assessment. The study would compare shielded and unshielded outcomes for the likelihood of Acute Radiation Syndrome, the severity of ARS if it occurs, and overall mortality using peer-reviewed literature, lab studies, and experimental data. The Secretary would have to seek the agreement within 30 days after enactment and deliver a report to the House and Senate Armed Services committees within 150 days.

Bone marrow radiation shielding study

If enacted, the bill would require the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Nuclear, Chemical, and Biological Defense to seek an agreement with a University Affiliated Research Center tied to U.S. Strategic Command within 30 days. That center would do an independent scientific assessment of partial-body radiation shielding that preserves bone marrow. The assessment would review peer-reviewed literature, lab studies, and relevant experimental data. It would compare effects on (1) the chance of Acute Radiation Syndrome, (2) ARS severity if it occurs, and (3) overall mortality after gamma radiation exposure. The Assistant Secretary would submit a report to the House and Senate Armed Services Committees within 150 days of enactment. The bill does not itself authorize new funding.
