Show full summary
  • Long-serving service members: Would be eligible for 72 months of educational assistance if they accumulate 20+ years of service, with the 20-year rule applying regardless of duty status or enlistment date.
  • Other veterans and beneficiaries: The existing 36-month entitlement remains in place for all other individuals, so most beneficiaries keep the current 36-month limit.
  • Benefit rules and transfers: It modifies the rules that limit combined use and month transfers so the 20-year group can use the additional months while the baseline framework continues to govern others.

More GI Bill months for 20-year veterans

If enacted, this bill would let veterans who complete an aggregate of 20 or more years of service on or after the date of enactment receive 72 months of educational assistance under chapter 33. This would apply without regard to duty status or when the veteran joined the Armed Forces. Veterans eligible under this rule could transfer up to 72 months to family members. All other veterans would continue to be limited to 36 months, and the usual 3695(a) limit would not apply to the 20-year group.
