American Electric Rail Mapping Act of 2026
Sponsored By: Representative Beyer, Donald S. [D-VA-8]
Introduced
Summary
A nationwide feasibility study of rail electrification would require the Federal Railroad Administration to map existing and planned passenger and freight corridors and assess where electrification or other clean rail technologies might be feasible. The study would identify every corridor, note how each system is powered and whether each railroad is Class I, II, or III, and flag corridor segments suitable for electrification or other clean technologies. The agency would consult railroad owners and operators, States, localities, Tribes, the District of Columbia, and territories, use existing FRA resources to limit added costs, and deliver a progress report within one year and a final report one year after that.
