Law school legal help for employees
If enacted, the Labor Department would run a grant program for accredited law schools. The schools would run attorney-supervised clinics, externships, and pro bono programs. The program would be authorized $5,000,000 for each fiscal year 2026 through 2030. No school could receive more than $500,000 in a fiscal year. Grants would pay for appeals of denied employer benefit claims, ERISA lawsuits, and defense in provider suits over unpaid out-of-pocket costs. Grants could also pay for a supervising attorney. The bill would require EBSA benefit advisors to coordinate with these clinics and give participants lists of clinics. Clinics could refer people to state health insurance consumer assistance offices or ombudsmen.
