Support center for grandfamilies
If enacted, this bill would create a National Technical Assistance Center on Grandfamilies and Kinship Families. The Department of Health and Human Services would run the Center by grant or contract, led by the Assistant Secretary for Aging in consultation with the Assistant Secretary for the Administration for Children and Families. The bill would provide $10,000,000 for fiscal year 2027 to operate the Center, and those funds would remain available through September 30, 2031. The Center would give training, technical help, coordination, and resources to community groups, government programs, Indian Tribes, urban Indian organizations, and Tribal organizations, with a priority on evidence-based practices and on families where the caregiver is age 55 or older or the child has one or more disabilities. Any grant or contract operator would need to be a nonprofit with demonstrated expertise on grandfamilies, experience working with Tribal organizations, running peer-learning networks, engaging grandfamilies for input, and helping tailor services to their needs.
