The physical magnet is essentially identical: high-energy-density sintered NdFeB with dysprosium doping for high-temperature coercivity. China's April 2025 export controls on rare earth-related products specifically listed NdFeB magnets as requiring export licenses -- because the same magnet technology that makes Tesla Model 3 motors efficient also makes guided munitions and radar systems accurate. JL MAG was among the six designated companies to receive expedited export licenses, meaning the Chinese government selected which magnet manufacturers could most quickly process Western automotive customer orders -- giving Beijing allocation power over EV and defense supply chains simultaneously.

JL MAG's Baotou Phase III project, announced in 2024 and under construction, will bring total JL MAG Baotou capacity to 40,000 tonnes per year of sintered NdFeB — making it the single largest NdFeB production site on earth. The $143.6 million facility is located in the Baotou Rare Earth High-Tech Zone, adjacent to Baotou Steel's rare earth separation operations in Inner Mongolia, enabling tightly integrated mine-to-magnet supply. At full capacity JL MAG would supply ~20% of global sintered NdFeB demand.

JL MAG Rare-Earth is headquartered in Ganzhou, Jiangxi Province -- a city that has become the global center of heavy rare earth mining, processing, and magnet manufacturing through deliberate Chinese industrial policy. Ganzhou sits above the world's largest deposits of ionic-type rare earth ores rich in heavy rare earths (dysprosium, terbium, gadolinium), which were first identified by Chinese geologists in the 1960s-70s. The Chinese government developed a vertically integrated industrial cluster in Ganzhou: mining > hydrometallurgical separation > alloy production > magnet manufacturing. JL MAG was founded within this cluster in 2000 and scaled aggressively as EV demand for high-temperature NdFeB magnets grew in the 2010s. By 2024 it had doubled capacity to 25,000 MT/yr, making it one of China's six designated 'leading magnet producers' with expedited export license access under China's April 2025 rare earth controls.
