Grants to help small farmers fight pest

If enacted, the Department of Agriculture would create a fund, run by APHIS, to pay for research and actions to reduce spotted wing drosophila damage to fruit crops. APHIS would pick eligible recipients, award grants or cooperative agreements, and oversee the work paid from the fund. The bill would authorize $6,500,000 to be appropriated for the fund in the fiscal year it is enacted and for each of the four fiscal years after (five fiscal years total). Small farmers who grow raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, strawberries, peaches, plums, or cherries would be able to receive support if APHIS designates them eligible.
