Nucor's EAF mills use approximately 70-80% recycled scrap steel as their primary feedstock, making Nucor one of the country's most carbon-efficient steel producers. The steel in a fire truck's chassis frame has a high probability of having been recycled from a previous vehicle — a prior car, a demolished building, a retired ship — melted and recast in an EAF.     Nucor Corporation traces its identity to a failed nuclear instruments company. Nuclear Corporation of America was a diversified electronics company that by the early 1960s was losing money in nuclear instruments, semiconductors, and real estate. Its only profitable unit was a small steel joists fabricator in Florence, South Carolina. In 1965, a young manager named Ken Iverson was given control of the company and made the counterintuitive decision to exit the glamorous nuclear technology business entirely and focus on the unglamorous steel joists unit. Iverson then invented the modern EAF mini-mill model: small, non-union, performance-pay, rural location, fast decision-making. By the 1980s Nucor was outcompeting US Steel and Bethlehem on cost while paying its workers more than union integrated mills, because productivity gains were shared directly. Nucor is a NYSE-listed company still named after its failed nuclear predecessor.

    Nucor runs ~20 million tons/yr of steel production with zero blast furnaces — its scrap-fed EAF model makes it uniquely vulnerable to scrap price spikes but immune to coking coal disruptions Nucor is the largest US steel producer (~20 Mt/yr) yet has never operated a blast furnace. Its ~25 EAF mini-mills run on purchased scrap steel (supplemented by DRI). This model eliminates exposure to iron ore and coking coal markets — but creates acute sensitivity to scrap markets. During the 2021-22 steel boom, scrap prices rose from ~$250 to ~$650/ton (HMS #1), compressing EAF margins even as hot-rolled coil prices hit record highs. Nucor acquired DJJ scrap processing to partially vertically integrate its feedstock.
