ICL Dead Sea Bromine — Sodom (Sdom) Plant

ICL's primary bromine extraction and conversion facility at Sodom (Sdom), southern Israel, on the southwestern shore of the Dead Sea. The Dead Sea Bromine Co. (DSBC) subsidiary extracts brine from the Dead Sea's 150 km² southern evaporation basin. Bromine is extracted via chlorination of the hypersaline brine (Dead Sea salinity ~34% vs. ~3.5% ocean). The facility produces elemental bromine plus downstream: tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA for PCBs), clear brine fluids for oil well completion, hydrogen bromide gas (semiconductor-grade HBr for chip fab etching), and flame retardants. Capacity ~280,000 t/yr; actual production ~173,000-180,000 t/yr. Located within 35 km of Dimona nuclear facility and Arad city. Export routes: overland to Haifa (Mediterranean) or Ashdod ports. The entire Israeli bromine extraction and HBr gas conversion infrastructure is co-located at this single Negev Desert site.

Also the world's largest source of bromine — a separate critical mineral extracted from the same Dead Sea brine. ICL and Arab Potash together risk exhausting the viable southern basin brine over decades.

ICL is the world's largest bromine producer. Bromine is a critical material for flame retardants (in electronics), biocides (water treatment, oil & gas), and pharmaceutical intermediates.     Dead Sea Works (ICL) extracts potash from evaporation ponds covering the southern Dead Sea — but the Dead Sea water level is declining at ~1 meter per year due to water diversion upstream. If the Dead Sea dries sufficiently, the brine concentration methods used for potash extraction become infeasible. ICL's Dead Sea operation — 7% of global potash supply — has a geological/environmental sunset built into it. ICL has been investing in conventional mining in Iberia (Spain) as a hedge.
