Producer
Nutrien Ltd.
World's largest potash producer with 6 Saskatchewan mines. Vanscoy mine (west of Saskatoon) uses solution mining technology — fresh water drawn from the Saskatchewan River (~20km pipeline) is used in brine management. Deep subsurface saline aquifer brine injection used for waste disposal at Vanscoy (injected into Winnipeg/Deadwood Formations at 1,500-1,700m depth). Conventional underground mines at Rocanville, Allan, Lanigan, Cory, Belle Plaine also produce waste brine requiring aquifer disposal. Nutrien operates Canada's only solution potash mine at Vanscoy. Plans to reach 18M MT/year Saskatchewan capacity.

Did you know2024
Nutrien holds simultaneous #1 market positions in three separate agricultural inputs: potash (world's largest miner, ~20% global supply), nitrogen fertilizers (world's largest producer), and agricultural retail (Nutrien Ag Solutions, largest retail ag supply chain in North America with 1,700+ retail locations). The company was formed in 2018 from the merger of PotashCorp and Agrium — two companies that were themselves among the world's largest in their segments. A single Canadian company controls the largest position in all three of the primary macronutrients essential for crop production (N, P — through Mosaic's phosphate, which competes — and K). Nutrien's combined market dominance in crop inputs has no historical precedent.
Nutrien Ltd. ↗Concentration2024
Nutrien was formed from the 2018 merger of PotashCorp and Agrium, creating the world's largest potash producer (~20% global share) in a single deal. Combined with Mosaic's ~15% share, two Canadian companies marketed jointly through Canpotex control ~35% of global potash exports — effectively a North American export cartel.
