    POSCO's Pohang works was built with US foreign aid money in 1968 — South Korea had no iron ore, no coking coal, and no steelmaking tradition, yet it is now one of the world's most efficient mills POSCO was founded in 1968 with $100M in Japanese war reparations and World Bank financing, over the objections of US advisors who deemed South Korean steel unviable. The Pohang Integrated Steel Works (POSCO's main plant) became operational in 1973 and reached 9 Mt/yr capacity by 1981. With no domestic iron ore or coking coal, POSCO built a supply chain importing 100% of raw materials from Australia, Brazil, and Canada — yet achieved cost efficiencies that made it the world's lowest-cost integrated steelmaker by the 1990s, disrupting the US and European industries.

    POSCO began construction of a new KRW 1 trillion ($740 million) eco-friendly high-efficiency electrical steel facility at its Gwangyang Works (South Jeolla Province, South Korea) to add 300,000 tonnes/year of high-grade non-oriented and grain-oriented electrical steel capacity, targeting completion by 2025. POSCO is simultaneously planning to build additional electrical steel factories in North America — an announcement made in 2023 — targeting the growing US EV and grid transformer market. POSCO's total electrical steel capacity when the expansion completes reaches 1.13 million tonnes per year.
